How much Progesterone should I use?

Progesterone usage depends on your current hormonal and menstrual status. The following are general recommendations that should be confirmed or modified after consultation with your medical health care provider. Salivary or serum hormonal testing will provide information on your current levels of progesterone and help you assess the amount of natural progesterone that you need and the amount of Progesterone to use.

The following are ONLY general recommendations that may
need to be modified by your healthcare professional for your specific situation:

Women in their reproductive years - still ovulating. In this case, women would normally take progesterone cream for PMS, painful cramping with periods, menstrual irregularities, and to protect against osteoporosis later in life. Begin using Progesterone after you have ovulated. Ovulation usually occurs about 10 to 14 days after your period begins. Count the day the period begins as the first day. Apply one premeasured dose of Progesterone
(20 mg. of natural progesterone) every day from day 14 to day 26.

Women who are perimenopausal (still menstruating with menopausal symptoms and/or PMS but not ovulating) Count the day the period begins as the first day. Day 1 to 6, do not use progesterone cream. Day 7 to 27, apply one dose of progesterone cream (20 mg. of natural progesterone) every day. If your period begins early, stop using Progesterone while you are bleeding. Count the first day of bleeding as day one of the cycle and begin the counting all over again.

Women who are post menopausal (for prevention or reversal of osteoporosis). Choose a calendar day (e.g. the first day of the month) as day one. Day 1 - 25 apply one dose of Progesterone daily. Day 25 - 30 (or 31), stop using the Progesterone. It is suggested by Dr. Lee that the body be given a rest and progesterone not be applied during this period.

Women with severe osteoporosis.Day 1 - 25 use one to two doses of progesterone cream per day. Day 25 - 30 (or 31), stop using the Progesterone. It is suggested by Dr. Lee that the body be given a rest and progesterone not be applied during this period.

Important Note: It is strongly suggested that you consult with a Health Care Practitioner to monitor your bone density while using the progesterone cream. Dr. Lee recommends that a bone mineral density analysis be conducted annually to monitor progress. Dr. Lee also notes that age has no effect at all on the effectiveness of progesterone when used for osteoporosis.

Do I need a break from using the progesterone cream each month? Yes.

For menstruating women, it is important that the progesterone cream only be used from the 14th to the 26th day, counting the day the period starts as the first day. The reason is that the body uses progesterone to hold the blood lining in place during the last two weeks of the menstrual cycle. If the progesterone cream is used out of sequence, it will interfere with the menstrual cycle.

For non-menstruating women, it is recommended by Dr. Lee that the progesterone cream be used for three weeks and then one week off.

What benefits can I expect when using natural progesterone? The remarkable benefits of natural progesterone have become evident in recent years and its use in clinical situations is growing due to an increasing dissatisfaction among women taking synthetic hormones manufactured by the drug companies. A growing number of health professionals in the United States and Europe use natural progesterone with great success in treating a wide variety of female health problems. Dr. Lee is credited with being the originator of the revolution that is going on among those who have discovered natural progesterone and they have turned it into one of the most sought after natural nutrients in the world today.

The most significant benefit of progesterone is that it resolves the problem of estrogen dominance. Estrogen dominance has a toxic effect on the body and can lead to serious health problems, especially in women. Progesterone is also beneficial to the brain, improves sex drive, resolves PMS problems, dissolves fibrocystic lumps in the breasts and elsewhere, and it prevents or reverses osteoporosis.

The functions of progesterone are summarized by Dr. Lee as follows:
Progesterone is a precursor of other sex hormones, including estrogen and testosterone
Progesterone maintains secretory endometriun (uterine lining)
Progesterone is necessary for the survival of the embryo and fetus throughout gestation
Progesterone protects against fibrocystic breasts
Progesterone is a natural diuretic
Progesterone helps use fat for energy
Progesterone functions as a natural antidepressant
Progesterone helps thyroid hormone action
Progesterone normalizes blood clotting
Progesterone restores sex drive
Progesterone helps normalize blood sugar levels
Progesterone normalizes zinc and copper levels
Progesterone restores proper cell oxygen levels
Progesterone has a thermogenic (temperature-raising) effect
Progesterone protects against endometrial cancer
Progesterone helps protect against breast cancer
Progesterone builds bone and is protective against osteoporosis
Progesterone is a precursor of cortisone synthesis by adrenal cortex

What Is Progesterone USP? USP stands for United States Pharmacopoeia which is the international standard of purity for substances used in the manufacture of drugs and cosmetics. In the case of progesterone, USP simply confirms that the progesterone is the identical molecule as is produced by the human body. The title progesterone USP, identifies the progesterone as natural and differentiates it from the synthetic versions which are often referred to as progestins or progestogens.

Will Mexican Wild Yam provide the same benefits as natural progesterone? No. The raw material for natural progesterone is usually wild yam but a word of caution is necessary here and that is that wild yam extract is not the same as progesterone. Progesterone is obtained by extracting diosgenin from wild yams and then converting this component into natural progesterone in the laboratory. Natural progesterone is referred to as natural because it is the identical molecule to that which the human body manufactures. Synthetic progestins are also made from diosgenin extracted from wild yam but the key difference is that the molecular structure of progestins are different and are not natural to the human body.

There is no evidence that wild yam is converted into progesterone once it enters into the human body and unlike natural progesterone, no conclusive formal studies have ever been conducted that identifies any particular benefits from wild yam.

What are the differences between synthetic and natural progesterone? Synthetic progesterone (normally referred to as a progestin) are drugs which are manufactured by pharmaceutical companies and are only available by prescription. The molecule of the synthetic progestin is close enough to the natural progesterone that it seeks out and resides in the progesterone receptors in the body. These progestins (provera is the most common of them) are not natural to the body and as a result cause undesirable side effects.

Natural progesterone is natural because it is the identical molecule as that manufactured by the human body. When natural progesterone supplements are taken there are no side effects.

Why do we recommend Natural Radiance? The Natural Radiance Progesterone Creme is a fine quality hypo-allergenic cream that contains pharmaceutical grade natural progesterone. It is light, non-oily, and is readily absorbed into the skin for transportation of the progesterone to the fat cells. It is stored in the fat cells for use as needed by the body. Natural Radiance products do not contain parabens as presevatives, and id the cleanest, least loxic product on the market

We offer the Natural Radiance Progesterone in jars or Pump bottles. 6 pumps delivers exactly 20 mg. of natural progesterone. Twenty mg. (up to a maximum of 30 mg.) is the dosage that is recommended by Dr. Lee. The cream is not exposed to the air as it is with a jar, so it maintains its effectiveness and freshness much better.

What are the side effects associated with natural progesterone? There are no known negative side effects, only positive effects.

How long will a 3oz. jar of Progesterone last? A 2-oz jar of Natural Radiance Progesterone will usually last 2 months at the suggested dose.

Why does my body not produce enough progesterone? Did Nature make the mistake? No. As Dr. Lee says, "Mother Nature did a beautful job with the woman's body". Progesterone deficiency, or what Dr. Lee refers to as estrogen dominance, is a phenomena of the Western industrialized world--especially over the last 50 years. One hundred years ago women did not have the menopausal problems, osteoporosis problems, and the breast cancer issues that they have to deal with today, all of which are escalating at an alarming rate. Women in non-industrialized cultures whose diets are traditional and are untainted with modern processed foods and pesticides do not normally suffer a deficiency in progesterone.

Dr. Lee speculates that Western women started to suffer from a progesterone deficiency (estrogen dominance) as a result of our modern way of life and the excessive estrogenic substances in the air and in the food we eat. He suggests that ovaries stop making progesterone prematurely and the adrenal cortex and brain are forced to pick up 100% of progesterone production to produce corticosteroids and there isn't much progesterone left over for other functions such as balancing estrogen levels. He comments that the adrenals in many women are so depleted they can't even make enough progesterone to make the corticosteroids which he suggests is an important factor in the chronic fatigue syndrome which is so prevalent in women in their mid-thirties and early forties.
