Why did my
Doctor tell me I don't need progesterone after my hysterectomy?
That's
a very good question! One can only guess, but a little history of
hormone supplementation provides a few clues. At one time, estrogen was
given freely without the use of progesterone to balance it. Then it was
realized that unopposed estrogen promoted cancer in women with a uterus
so, since the pharmaceutical industry needed to add progesterone to balance
the estrogen, they patented a synthetic progestin to be given with estrogen.
The results of the WHI study tell the rest of the story....synthetic
progestins added to estrogen increased the risks
of heart attack, stroke and blood clots. For full information on the findings
of this study see report on it on the NIH
website.
So
now, the direction seems to be to give just estrogen to women who have
had their uterus removed. This thinking overlooks that fact that you can
still develop breast cancer and ovarian cancer, and that the risks of heart
attack, senilty, stoke and blood clots still remain with the use of synthetic
(patented) estrogen. (if you doubt this, just listen closely to the warnings
required by law on the TV ads for estrogen). According to Dr. Lee, the
only safe form of estrogen supplementation is natural estriol along with
natural progesterone.
What about
the Wiley Protocol that uses large doses of hormones with elaborate cycling
to restore the menses in post menopausal women?
We
cannot comment on that, but Virginia Hopkins (Dr. Lee's co-author) gives
a good reasonable answer in her newsletter
here. (Be sure to come back to this page after reading her comments)
Is it either
beneficial or harmful to use bioidentical homones if I am concerned about
heart disease?
Once
again, Virginia Hopkins has an excellent article on that in her newsletter.
It is reporting on a study done on the effect to the heart by using Bioidentical
hormones. Click

Questions
& Answers about BNHs & how to use
Progesterone
Creme: According
to leading authorities, including Dr. John Lee, women begin losing the
ability to produce adequate progesterone in their 30's. For this reason,
they often become estrogen dominant, leading to many undesirable symptoms,
including certain cancers. Combined with this, is the problem of "environmental
estrogens" Dr Lee refers to these as xenoestrogens. They are pesticides
and other toxic chemicals used in the environment that are estrogenic in
nature, that is; the body identifies them as estrogen and allows them to
attach to estrogen receptor sites in the breast, and other areas. Since
they are carcinogenic, they are a cause of many cancers and other undesirable
health problems.
Progesterone helps to balance the condition known as estrogen dominance.
Progesterone keeps estrogen in the proper balance for health.
For this reason, Progesterone is the first
hormone a woman should consider supplementing and should always be used
whenever you use either estrogen or testosterone supplementation.
Estriol Creme: Women usually do not need to supplement estrogen until well after menopause because, even though they lose the ability to produce progesterone, they are able to continue producing estrogen for several years. Progesterone alone will usually control hot flashes and other symtoms of menopause quite well. If, after a few years, you notice hot flashes or night sweats returning or have vaginal dryness or bone loss, it is an indication you may need to now begin supplemental estrogen. According to Dr. Lee, the only safe form of estrogen is estriol.
